Marysia Jaczynska

'The themes of my sculptures are mainly based on human and animal shapes and emotions. They belong to the tradition of the narrative and figurative with a gradual transition towards abstraction of shape. I seek to express the essence, the inner depth of the subject matter using forms that are reduced to a minimum (Tears).

I search for harmony of proportion and equilibrium of forms (A Man and a Woman). My main concerns are to convey emotions while retaining a simplicity, a flow of line, while constantly searching for different wood or stone with colours and textures that will best express the subject matter and bronze patinas with an organic feel (Lullaby).

I am facinated by the works of Michelangelo, Rodin, Maillol, Brancusi and Marini, but do not feel directly influenced by any one artist. My work is moving towards abstraction of form while still portraying the subject's feelings and thoughts. The latter could be attributed partly to my Polish heritage. Also I spent two years in France and ten years in North and East Africa and Italy. The cultures of these countries and their artistic riches proved a very stimulating and valuable experience'.
