Franco Giomi

April 24th - April 27th 2008

Private View: Wednesday 23rd April 2008 6pm to 10pm

West-Eleven is pleased to present Watercolours - a poetic look at wild nature, everyday life and dreams featuring work by the Italian artist Franco Giomi.

Franco Giomi’s watercolours of wild horses running in wetlands, cattlemen grouping herds of cows or bulls and sailing boats struggling against stormy wind-swept seas are highly evocative of Maremma - an austere and enchanting area of Tuscany located on the South Tirrenean coast and famous for its wild-life reserves and pine scented parks.

Along with these elemental representations, Giomi includes paintings of playfully coquettish women, at ease with their own sensuality. In both the landscape and figurative works Giomi’s narratives deal with notions of strength, freedom, elegance and the rugged indomitable potency of nature.

Some paintings have the look of traditional Tuscan postcards, albeit in motion. The luminous quality of light in the works is achieved by the predominance of white painted over underlying spots of color. His act of painting in a rapid motion, a natural gesture that doesn’t accept amendments or re-touching means the work is never still, more a fragment of some longer story he wants to tell us.

Giomi has exhibited extensively in St.Etienne, Milan, Florence, Rimini, Certaldo, Grosseto, S.Gimignano and his works are part of private collections in UK, Germany, US, and Switzerland.

This is his first solo show in England.
